history of CCBRT

1994: With the support of CBM, Dr. Willbrod Slaa, MP (still on the CCBRT Board) and Geert Vanneste founded CCBRT. Their mission was to contribute towards poverty alleviation by making rehabilitative services accessible and affordable to people with disabilities. In 1994, CCBRT was registered as a private Non-Governmental Tanzanian Society (NGO), under the Tanzanian Societies Act, No SO8261.

  • 1994 Establishment of the CCBRT Community Based Rehabilitation Programme in Dar es Salaam
  • 1995 Establishment of the International Training Programme
  • 1996 Establishment of the CCBRT Community Based Rehabilitation Programme Moshi
  • 1996 Foundation of the CCBRT Eye Unit
  • 2001 Foundation of the CCBRT Disability and Development Hospital
  • 2005 Introduction of the CBR Support Centres 
  • 2006 After 12 years of committed management, Geert Vanneste hands over the management of CCBRT to Erwin Telemans
  • 2008 Establishment of Programme Development Unit
  • 2009 Establishment of Communications Department
  • 2010 Establishment of Advocacy Department

CCBRT in the future

Over the coming years, we look forward to many exciting developments at CCBRT. Our strategic plan for 2008 - 2012 includes the following aims:

  • to consolidate and maintain the current service level and the number of surgeries carried out at our disability hospital.
  • to broaden the range of rehabilitative services at CCBRT Disability Hospital and offer speech, occupational therapy and a broader range of physiotherapy methods.
  • to provide a wider variety of mobility and seating devices for children with permanent disabilities e.g. corner chairs, standing frames, wheel chairs, tricycles.
  • to enhance the development and empowerment of staff members through regular staff training.
  • to ensure a continued high quality service and the close follow up of patients receiving services.
  • to improve maternal and newborn healthcare through Baobab Maternity Hospital.

Just seven months old, Sharaf wears a foot brace to straighten his clubfeet. Born with the condition in both feet, Sharaf is being treated at a young age which means that he will be able to play football like any other boy when he is older.

CCBRT statistics In November we:
  • carried out 22 fistula surgeries
  • performed 703 eye surgeries 
  • performed 43 cleft lip surgeries
  • saw 341 patients for physiotherapy
  • manufactured 149 new devices for people with disabilities
