Glaucoma

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually causes vision loss. Glaucoma causes a progressive damage of the optic nerve. Affected people with glaucoma feel like they are looking through a tunnel that becomes increasingly narrow. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.

What are the causes of glaucoma?
There is no specific cause know for glaucoma. However, glaucoma is often associated with a high pressure within the eye (intraocular pressure / IPO), increasing age, family history of glaucoma, diabetes, and myopia.

What is the cure of glaucoma?
There is no cure for glaucoma. Vision loss cannot be regained. With medication and / or surgery it is possible to halt further loss of vision.

What prevents glaucoma?
Early detection and treatment of glaucoma is the best way to control the disease. Therefore it is advisable that patients over 40 should have their eye pressure regularly checked. People with glaucoma, need to take daily medication.
