Who are we?

Set up in 1994, Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT) was established as a Community Based Rehabilitation programme searching for people with cataract in Dar es Salaam. Since then we have grown to become the largest indigenous provider of disability services in Tanzania. We are a locally registered NGO aiming to empower people with disabilities and their families, improve their quality of life, and ensure access to medical and rehabilitative treatment. Committed to preventing disabilities wherever possible, CCBRT is also engaged in extensive maternal and newborn healthcare (MNHC) activities.

CCBRT serves the poorest of the poor in the community and tries to remove as many barriers as possible to allow people to seek treatment. We are changing the lives and communities of some of the poorest and most marginalised people in Tanzania.

Kupona Foundation

Based in New York, Kupona Foundation is the American base of support for CCBRT. Kupona’s role is to drive support for CCBRT and its various activities and to ensure that American philanthropists at every level have maximum social impact abroad. 100% of donations to Kupona Foundation go to CCBRT.

Kupona means ‘to heal’ in Kiswahili. CCBRT and Kupona are committed to improving health care in Tanzania. Focused on the prevention of disability, capacity building and health system strengthening in maternal and newborn healthcare, Kupona strives to ensure that donations, materials, and volunteers reach the most people, save the most women and babies, and grant the most opportunities.  By connecting individuals and institutions in the U.S. directly with CCBRT, Kupona offers an incredibly rare opportunity to be a part of true change on a system-wide scale.  Kupona shares CCBRT’s vision of a Tanzania where people have access to quality disability services as well as safe maternal and newborn healthcare.
