advocacy in CCBRT

CCBRT is committed to playing an active part in mainstreaming disability into development issues. During 2009, CCBRT formulated a comprehensive project for its planned advocacy activities up to the end of 2011 in collaboration with the Tanzania Federation of Disabled People’s Organisations. This project, the specific objective of which is to to promote disability inclusive development in Tanzania and empower people with disabilities to exercise their human rights, is now underway with funding from AusAID through CBM Australia.

The project comprises three main elements:

Research activities: to ensure access to accurate information for monitoring progress on disability matters, informed decision-making, planning and advocacy.

Supporting the Government of Tanzania and development actors: by conducting assessments, training, offering advisory services, and facilitating linkages with Disabled People’s Organisations and other disability organisations, we will support the mainstreaming of disability in national and local programmes.

Capacity building: by strengthening disability organisations in their representation of people with disabilities, we will build the capacity of other Disabled People’s Organisations to advocate effectively on disability issues. The project will be implemented in close collaboration with other disability organisations, NGOs and relevant government institutions.

Current activities underway include:

  • 'Right to vote’ - lobbying the National Electoral Commission to ensure that elections (such as those held in October 2010), including information and polling stations, are accessible to all. Read our report, written after the 2010 elections, here
  • ‘Inclusive education’ - following up on the incorporation of modules in teachers’ training curricula and ensuring national examinations are adapted to meet the needs of children with a disability.
  • ‘Access to employment’ - developing a study targeting the largest companies and a trade union to assess the level of participation of persons with a disability in formal employment. A questionnaire is currently being shared with 300 of Tanzania’s largest employers to gauge the number of people with disabilities currently employed. Read the results of this survey in our comprehensive report.
