CCBRT eye department

Around 75% of people with eye problems in Africa could see again if they were to receive timely quality medical attention and care. Most of CCBRT's patients are visually impaired adults. However, it is a sad reality that a large proportion of children also have difficulties with their eyesight sometimes as a result of poor nutrition. To prevent visual impairment and blindness in Tanzania, CCBRT provides comprehensive services.

services

Services at the CCBRT Eye Department include:

  • consultation,
  • screening,
  • surgery,
  • low vision devices and spectacles.

Eye surgical unit

The eye surgical unit performs all types of ophthalmic surgery. The most common surgery is for cataract, including congenital cataract surgery. Glaucoma surgery and oculoplastic, lacrimal surgery, corneal transplant, vitreoretinal procedures and strabismus are also performed on a regular basis. All patients receive free follow up services two months after surgery to ensure quality outcomes of surgery.

Surgeons from western countries visit the hospital three or four times a year to teach and tackle more difficult cases.

Optical workshop

The optical workshop provides a wide range of spectacles including reading, myopic and progressive glasses. Patients can choose from a range of spectacles according to their capacity to pay.

Low vision unit

The low vision unit provides low vision optical devices like hand held lenses and magnifiers. It also offers training to children with severe visual impairments so they can improve their performance in day to day activities.
